The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 16 - 19, 1982

Saturday, January 16, 1982

Well it was so nice and sunny when we got up. It began to cloudy up in middle of forenoon. Then it began to snow, mostly flurries. I done regular work then I changed the beds, dusted, swept, washed floors. Made an Indian pudding, baked apple pie. I took a bath. Carmen up for breakfast. Betty and Walt called. Carmen and Zak up in evening. She was taking  Zak to the movies, he and Vince went. Kim worked again tonight. She is a smart and good girl. She pays attention to her business, knows just what she is doing.

Sunday, January 17, 1982 Carmen goes back to UMO

A very nice clear day but very very cold and windy. Today Carmen went back to college with the Bracketts. I hate to see her go. I really miss them when they don’t come up. I done regular work and wrote to Esther and Cliff. Miss Carmen and she has just gone. Kim came up which I was very pleased. She stayed till time to go to work. Betty came and took her down. I went with her. We went up over the Ridge, she called at Dorothea’s.

A very nice sunny day, the temps got up to 12 to 15 above. I done my wash, made a chocolate cake and a loaf of bread. I cooked a chicken. I had Kim up for supper, it was a very good supper. Kim enjoyed it very much. I watched TV shows in PM. We had chicken, it was delicious, chopped broccoli with cheese sauce, asparagus, warm bread, mashed potatoes, gravy and chocolate cake. Bill down to Betty’s, up to Dorothea’s. Billie down to Fern’s. Susan down to Betty’s in PM. Kids came after school and there for supper.
