The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, December 29, 1981

Well a quite nice day after the storm. I done up the work, vacuumed the house. Then I made bread. Got a boiled dinner to going. I have invited Carmen up for supper. Betty, Carmen and girls went to Norway, Portland and around looking for antiques etc. She got her lamps. When they got home I called them and invited them all up for supper. They enjoyed it very much. Bill plowed snow all day

Wednesday, December 30, 1981 BILL 73

Sun came out very nice and clear this morning. David called this morning. Well I been doing odd and end jobs today. Billie down to Fern’s. Bill got a check from Fern for 50, birthday. After supper Betty and family came. Dorothea, Joy. He got cards, many useful gifts.

Thursday, December 31, 1981 checks for January came today $339.20 $149.30

A fair day but it is going to cloud up and snow tonight. Such horrible weather. I went to town. Carmen took us today. I came home and did a lot of odds and end jobs. I watched some of the programs, worked at the desk. Zak came up for the night.

Well this is been quite an eventful year. Pres. Reagan took office, the hostages freed. A big celebration for them.

Bill got hearing aids. We got snow first of the winter. Then we got mild rains and it went away. Then each storm we had it blowed and melted away. So therefore we didn’t have much snow all winter. It was most all bare ground all winter. A nice comfortable winter. The plant suffered though, many died during the open winter. This winter all weather.

Within a couple weeks three young residents of town died suddenly. Carlton Warren, Bill (? Foster), Jim Emerson. A shock to the townspeople. The town manager Ervin L Linscott resigned from the office as town manager. A big surprise to the town. Also they sold their old home farm and moved away. Amy and all. That was just the biggest shock to everyone. After all these years. It was sold to Jacob Saliba of Arab. It still don’t seem possible.

With Carmen and Bill made plans and preparations for their trip to Scotland. First she had her graduating events. She went to the Junior and Senior prom with a nice friend, Tom Martin. She went to the class picnic, banquet and all the other get-togethers. She had a very nice time, graduated with honors. She got her drivers license also this spring. The graduating program of the class of 1981 was very good. Also she had a part in the senior play. We all attended the graduation, it was solemn as all are but very nice and interesting. We enjoyed it so much. Then it was getting ready for the trip to Scotland. She and Bill, that too was interesting and quite a lot of fun for her. She was so excited about it. Bill too enjoyed taking that trip.

Kim passed from freshmen to sophomore class. Zak from elementary to junior high. Also another event of 1981 was the Hortons bought a camp lot on the shores of Stearns with a small camp on it and they renovated it to a nice comfortable summer home. We had cookouts. Kids all went swimming in the lake and enjoyed it all very much.

Kim got her braces off this year. She has very pretty white teeth and straight. She is a very attractive young miss now. Dorothea opened up her antique shop this summer. She also worked for Gail Tarr. David painted their house, put on new blinds and have a very attractive home. The Thomas’s got a new car. They harvested their first farm vegetables and a large crop of nice hay.

Billie bought and sold cows and cattle off and on all summer. We now have a very nice young Jersey cow. She is a very pretty. Susan and kids to Florida this summer for a visit with her folks. It was very nice for them all.

Zak got hurt on his bike one day coming home from school. Not too serious. He went on an overnight trip with David on his run. Zenya and Carmen entered the UMO this fall. That was a big day, her moving to college. Fern, Betty, Walt and Zak and I all went up with her. It was a beautiful day and the collage and grounds are so nice, very pretty place. Laurie was there too and she likes it. It is her third year. Also Natasha is a senior there. Carmen likes this new and eventful life. We had a nice fall, got a lot of jobs done such as sawing wood and falls regular work done. Had a nice visit from Carmen in mid fall. Then a very nice Thanksgiving and Christmas with plenty of snow.

Jeff moved into Dorothea’s home. He played with the band some. He is now out of work. We hope he will fix his hair, get a new job and do well.

Kim has a steady weekend job babysitting for Mrs. Diran. She is showing improvements in school. Zak made the basketball team in junior high. Billie is doctoring. Hope he gets straightened out, his sugar is bad. Bill had a busy year doing jobs for  Betty and Dorothea. Betty bought a lot of antiques this past year.

Heidi had an operation this year. Zak had chickenpox March 29 this year.
