The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 20 - 23, 1982

Wednesday, January 20, 1982 4 above early, cold

 

A very nice day. I done up my work, we went to town today. Fern not very well. Betty and I called on her in the evening.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 21, 1982

 

Another nice day. I made a pie and custard today. I began work on the scraps today. I cooked a pot roast. Kim came up after school to visit. Walt home today from work.

 

 

 

Friday, January 22, 1982 zero temps

 

A quite nice day. I did a wash. I washed windows and other odd jobs. Watched soaps from 1 to 4. Bill in and out, up to Dorothea’s. They got the light in finally. She was pleased, David liked it. Billie’s car or truck in the garage all day. He couldn’t go anywhere. Fern much better. Zak up tonight after school, he is here for all night.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 23, 1982 SNOW, cold

 

A heavy snow storm today. It clouded up early in forenoon then it began to snow, about 10 it snowed very hard all day, but very cold. Zak watched TV until 2 PM. Dorothea and David called. Billie down to Fern’s and to town. Bill did a few odd jobs. I changed beds, dusted, swept, made cake, bread and rolls. Baked red kidney beans. I washed floors, took bath. Zak went home about 5 PM. A lot of snow came today. Walt took Kim to work.
