The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A nice day. I did regular work. Bill worked at Walt’s in the barn. Put in a new sill. I done regular work. Made rolls, cleaned up the house. Washed floors, baked beans, other odd jobs. Fern still sick. I took her supper tonight. Carmen and I did. Joy took her horses home tonight.

Not a very good day. I done up the regular work. Fern much better. She came up here in the evening. I got things started for supper. In late PM Betty called, invited us out for supper. Bill would not go nor Billie. So just Betty, Dorothea, kids and I went then when we got home had cake made by Kim. Very pretty, good too and ice cream. I had $90 in money and many nice cards and money and gifts.

It was cloudy in a.m. then it cleared. I hung my clothes outside. I did the sheets inside because it was still cloudy. I done up the work, went to the bank. Bill mad all day, didn’t speak. How foolish can a person get anyway. Carmen and Zak called today. Very hot. We had shell beans tonight. It was the string beans that went to shell beans. Jeff moved up to Dorothea’s today. I hope he will get a job soon and move to his own place.

Well it was cloudy and very foggy, it burned off. I did my ironing, defrosted refrigerator. Swept all through, made a couple pies. Bill worked on the boat. Billie busy all day. Kids up today. We had some bad thundershowers, the power was off for about an hour.
