The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 12 - 15, 1981

Wednesday, August 12, 1981 VERY HOT, STEER WENT

Not quite as much humidity. It was hot. Better than yesterday. I done up my regular work, went to town. I done a few odd and end jobs in PM, watched soaps. Bill mowed lawns. Billie sold the Jersey steer to Clyde Rowe. Bill and Kim mowed at Fern’s today. Bill mowed our lawns is PM.

It was more clear when I got up this morning then it had been for a week. We have had a terrible week with all the rain. Delores and I went to town with Carmen. She drove down to Casco to get her glasses, but he was closed because of the death of Dr. Gordon’s father. I came home, did rest of the work, got the supper to going then did my hair.

Friday, August 14, 1981 hair set

A quite nice day, quite hot. I done up my work, did a wash. Then went out, Billie and I, picked the shell beans. I got the clothes dried and in. Kids called for a little while. I got my hair set and cut today. I missed most of my programs today.

Saturday, August 15, 1981

Well it has been cloudy all day, late tonight we got showers. It was a little sunny in early a.m. I done up my regular work and my Saturday chores. Then I went to work on the shell beans. I got nine boxes frozen today. Will finish them tomorrow. About 5 PM Walt’s sister and family came. Jeff called. He and Billie and David moved Fern’s freezer up to David’s.
