The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 26 - 28, 1981 Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26, 1981

well we had another Thanksgiving dinner of the same line of foods. Turkey, roast pork, gravies, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, boiled onions, turnip, shell beans, celery, olives, salad, dark bread, rolls, lemon sponge pie, squash pie, chocolate pie, chiffon cake, chocolate milk and coffee. It was all so good. Everyone enjoyed it very much. Fern and Betty’s family came and Dorothea and Dawn called in evening. It was very good having Carmen home. She and Kim are so good at helping with the dinner. Very smart girls.

Well today was a rainy day. Some snow and sleet. We was going shopping but Walt took the car over to have it fixed so we didn’t go to Portland. Carmen, Betty and Dorothea went to North Windham and got most of Carmen’s shopping done. Also Dorothea got a lot of hers done. I was busy all day. I did a big wash.

Well no rain but it was mostly cloudy with some snow flurries. I cleaned up the house, did a big ironing. Washed a few things by hand, washed floors. And other odd jobs. Billie helped David was some wood. Bill helped all the Horton’s, they split wood and piled it up. Betty, Walt, Carmen, Kim and Zak. Bill said the kids did a good job.
