The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 3 - 6, 1981 Carmen Called - a RED LETTER DAY!!

 

Thursday, September 3, 1981 $339.30 + $149.20 = $488.50

 

Kids gone to the orthodontist. Kimmy had her braces taken off, she looks so nice. Her teeth are beautiful. Bill took Fern and I to town. Fern got her hair set. Delores went with Dorothea and Susan. I watched TV in PM. Joy called in evening. She is pleased about her new granddaughter and her taxes all paid. Dorothea called this evening. Betty got me a nice box of Fannie Farmer chocolates. Kim brought them up.

 

 

 

Friday, September 4, 1981

 

Well it was cloudy in forenoon, finally the sunny sun came out. And it was nice all PM. I went to town in a.m., worked at the desk in PM. Betty and kids up to camp lot. Zak, Vince, Chris and Cindy.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 5, 1981 CARMEN CALLED

 

I done up my Saturday work, changed beds, swept, dusted, washed around windows etc. Baked beans. Washed floors, took bath. Worked at desk all PM. Tonight we got a call from Carmen at the UM Orono. She sure sounded good. Seemed very happy.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 6, 1981

 

I been busy all day. I defrosted the refrigerator, I done some cooking. Bill and Billie busy. Kids called today. Kind of a cloudy day. Worked at the desk. I wrote to Esther.
