The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice pretty day. When we got up it was so awful hot and humid. I didn’t get up till 7 AM. I done up the work. And Fern came, we worked on the shell beans. I canned five jars. Then I started supper. Fern stayed until about 10:30 PM. She enjoyed her supper very much and sitting on the back porch. Joy and Kathy came for milk. Betty’s family and Sandra and family came late night and they had a good time riding the motorbike, horses etc. Then they all went up to the camp lot. They had a cookout, enjoyed it all so much. Barnaby’s called to see Bill.

This is been a day of all kinds of weather. It was cloudy, clear, windy, rain and got real cool in PM. I done up the regular work and was going down to Betty’s, but she called and wanted to know if I wanted to go down to the mountaintop in Casco. So I did. Carmen, Kim, Zak, Susan, Vince, Chris, Monica, Tara and myself. Gee, it was awful going up that trail. It was nice up there, you can see so much. It was quite cloudy and showers, all the kids sat in the back of the truck, froze almost to death. Zak got in front. He was cold all through.
