The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 13 -16, 1980

 

Monday, October 13, 1980 Sawed a lot of Walt’s wood, NEW COW CAME

 

It was mostly cloudy all day. I got up early, they got ready and sawed the wood at Walt’s. All helped the Hortons. Betty hurt her back the first thing. Carmen called. Kimmy came up for supper. I watch the TV soaps this PM.

Tuesday, October 14, 1980 Cloudy cold and windy

 

It was very cold. I did the work. Cleaned up the whole house. Betty went to the doctors today. She threw her hip out yesterday unloading wood. I watched the programs. The cow is doing okay. She is going to be all right. A nice gentle cow.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 15, 1980

 

A beautiful sunny day. It was on the cool side. I done up my regular work. Got ready, washed my kitchen floor and also early I defrosted refrigerator. I went down to Betty’s, her back still bad. I helped her a little. Dorothea came. I came home, got lunch, got things ready for supper than I watched programs while preparing supper. Billie fixed the raspberries.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 16, 1980 Put in new tank for the water

 

Well it is been a cloudy day. Very cold this morning but it warmed up. I done up my regular work. Then Dorothea came and we went to town. Today Bill and Dubriuel put the new water tank in and then the pump on the wood furnace. Then Bill drained all the pipes, radiators etc. Betty a dite better today. This water tank will not become air bound. Bought it at Sears.
