The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 13 -15, 1980

Thursday, November 13, 1980

A quite nice day. I done up my regular work, got ready and went to town. Didn’t go till late. Dorothea took us. In PM I did a wash. Watched TV in PM. Bill and Billie worked in the woods in PM. Kim came up and brought up a bag of flour. Betty and Zak called a minute. The cats at shelter were all put to sleep today. They got a disease from some rabbits. They think, very contagious anyway.

I done up my regular work. Swept, dusted, done some ironing. Watched the TV shows in PM. Joy called a little while. She has been cleaning, disinfecting and fuming getting up to the shelter. Bill and Billie worked in the woods. In or at suppertime Dorothea and David came and brought a very nice mincemeat pie and cake. My stove or oven still isn’t fixed. Carmen’s cat has not come back, he must’ve got killed. Dorothea and I down to Fern’s and did her windows.

A nice sunny day. I done up regular work. Then I did some windows, dusted, other jobs and washed floors. Took a bath, went down in the woods where they are working cutting wood. Then I walked down to Betty’s to check on the dog. They all went to Portland. The Horton’s to do Christmas shopping. They had good luck. Got jackets, boots, shoes and other clothing.
