The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 1 - 4, 1980

Saturday, November 1, 1980

A nice day, some clouds around. Still on the cooler side. The month of October has been quite cold, a lot of cloudy days, not too much rain. What we got helped in the wells. I have been very busy all day. I done up regular work, cleaned, dusted, washed floors, made bread, rolls, pies, cake and custard pudding. Betty, Charlene, Zak and Walt all called. Also Carmen and Billie hauled sawdust. Carmen down to school, took SAT Test, went to a AFS dance and a party. It snowed late this evening. Billie and I called at Dorothea and Dave’s this evening. Very cozy and hot up there. Dave put up some shelves and Dorothea’s kitchen. It looks nice.

Sunday, November 2, 1980

Another partly cloudy day. I didn’t get up until 7:45. Got breakfast, made the beds. David called. Stayed an hour or so talking, he is more relaxed now that he has most of his work caught up. I didn’t plan on doing much but we cleaned the cellar. It looks much better. Very cold. Kimmy got thrown from the horse today.

Monday, November 3, 1980 $305.30 $130.40 Finished Septic System

A beautiful day. I done the wash. Cooked T-bone steaks for supper. Bill outside while they finished the septic system today. They done a very nice job. Bill over to help Susan fix her faucets today.

Tuesday, November 4, 1980 hair set, DAVID to hospital, Ronald Wilson Reagan

Mostly cloudy. I got up early, got ready and went to get my hair set at Janet’s. It looks very nice. Also I went down and voted and Bill. Today David entered NCM hospital for hemorrhoid. I’ve done a lot, got my chicken cooking, made a loaf of banana bread. Busy all day and watched soaps. Bill and Billie cleaned up the yard today. It looks real good. I made out my bills. Tonight Ronald Wilson Reagan became president. He won by a landslide. All states but 6. I watched the returns till about 12.
