The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 24 - 27, 1980 Happy Thanksgiving!

 

Monday, November 24, 1980

 

It has been cloudy all day. I did my washing and also ironed. I washed and ironed the kitchen curtains and put back to the windows also. I watched programs in PM. Zak got his school pictures this PM, they are very good. He is nice-looking. Also he get his HAIRCUT, looks very good.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 25, 1980

 

Well it has been cloudy. I have made a loaf of Fern’s Graham Nut Bread this morning. Then Fern, Joy, Dorothea and I all went with Betty over to Oxford, South Paris and Norway. Done a dite of shopping. Came home late and got supper. Billie mad because I was gone.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 26, 1980 First sunny day for several days

 

It has been a clear windy day, heavy winds. I have been very busy all day cooking, cleaned up the house. I made lemon sponge, squash and date filled pies and tarts. I made a fruit salad. Betty and Dorothea to town and done my shopping for me. Bill up to Dorothea’s fixing her doors. Billie called at Fern’s today. Carmen up tonight and helped me prepare the vegetables. Carmen’s pictures is in the B News this week. Laurie called this morning.

 

 

 

Thursday, November 27, 1980 Thanksgiving day

 

A beautiful day. I got up early. Got the turkey and pork into the oven. Got the work done up, got ready for company. Carmen and Kim came up, we got dinner and we had a nice early dinner. Betty, Walt and children and Fern here for dinner and supper. We had turkey, pork, mashed potato, sweet potatoes, gravies, cranberry sauce, salad, turnips, onions, squash, shell beans, celery, dark bread, white bread. Lemon sponge, squash and date filled pies and nice tarts. Coffee.
