The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 1 - 4, 1980

 

Monday, December 1, 1980

 

A pretty nice day. Betty and I up to New Hampshire and did Christmas shopping. We also did some grocery shopping. We didn’t get home until 5:30. Called at Fern’s. She isn’t very good yet.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 2, 1980

 

Well it has been cloudy most all day. We did a wash and ironed. Betty to Portland to the orthodontist for Kim, also Cindy and Joy went to the orthodontist with Cindy, they did a lot of Christmas shopping, home early. The New Hope Farm meeting tonight. They had closed it down but some donors came across and donated some funds to keep it open for a few months longer.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 3, 1980 $305.30 $130.40 total $435.70

 

Cloudy all day. I done up my work. I worked at the desk, sent bills. Down to Betty’s a little while. Fern seems better today. Bill and Ilan fixed Ilan’s snow plow. I wrapped Christmas gifts down to Betty’s a little while. It rained last night, most of the snow has gone.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 4, 1980 COLD, WINDY

 

Gee we have had some very heavy winds the past few days. It blowed so awful hard. I went to town with Betty and Delores shopping.
