The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 17 - 20, 1980

 

Wednesday, December 17, 1980 Got C. tree in

 

A clear cold day. I done up my work, a few odd jobs, got ready and went to town. Had a lot to do. Betty and I. We went up to Dorothea’s and picked her up, drove up to Evelyn Ridlon’s. Betty had some papers signed and Dorothea and I had to witness them. Came home, done a weeks work. Kids and Betty brought up our tree and set it up tonight. Dorothea to Norway and finished her shopping.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 18, 1980

 

A quite nice day, it cleared. The sun came out. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s. We made cornballs. She made pumpkin bread and fudge. I came home, got supper. Joy and Dorothea called.

 


 

 

 

 

Friday, December 19, 1980 14 below

 

A nice sunny day, very cold this morning early. I done up regular work. I did a wash. Betty, Dorothea and I called at Tom’s.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 20, 1980 14 below when we got up at 5:20 AM

 

Very cold all day. I been busy all day. I cleaned up, washed windows, floors, dusted. Swept all the house etc. etc. Took a bath, had some good beans for supper. Billie been gone most of the day. Bill also. I like to have them gone then I can get a lot done. I done a lot of odds and end jobs. I made 2 batches of fudge. I did an ironing.
