The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 20 -23, 1980 Nanny Bakes Bread at Midnight!

 

Thursday, November 20, 1980

 

A nice day. I done some washing and some other work. Down to Betty’s a little while. Billie cleaned up the tractor shed etc. He cleaned up the flower gardens. Dorothea down to Fern’s to do her hair tonight.

Friday, November 21, 1980

 

A nice mild day. I done some cleaning, dusting, washed windows on inside. Billie wash them all over the house on the outside. They look some better. Betty called a little while. Dorothea called after supper.

 

 

 

Saturday, November 22, 1980

 

Very nice day. I have done a lot. I got my work done up. Got the bread made. Then Betty and Carmen Kim and Dorothea went to Portland and wanted me to go. I went, left about noon, didn’t get home till 10 or 10:30 PM. I did a dite more shopping. We went to the new Bradlee’s shopping store at North Windham and the new (?). First went to the South Portland shopping mall. They were so crowded. Betty done a lot. Dorothea did some. Carmen and Kim got theirs done. I came home and baked my bread. It didn’t come out very good. Got to bed about 12:30.

 

 

 

Sunday, November 23, 1980

 

Sunny when we got up but it got cloudy. I didn’t get up till 7:30. I got the breakfast then I made cookies. Did up the work. Charlene called them Bill and I drove up to see their house. They have a cute home.
