The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 8, 1979 First Day of School

Wednesday, September 5, 1979 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, Carmen Junior, Kimmy 8th grade, Zak 4th grade, 16 – 13 – 9

A nice day. It was the first day of school. I done up part of my work and went down to see the kids all togged out in their new clothes for school. They look so nice. Betty and I went up to Dorothea’s, to the drugstore, down to pick Bill up. He took Barnaby’s car to the garage for it to be stored for the winter. I came home, did a big ironing, rest of my work. Down to Betty’s and picked some more shell beans. Came home, did my hair, shelled the beans, canned four quarts. They moved the stove down cellar.

Well it has been partly cloudy and some sunshine. I got up early. I made bread, rolls, 2 batches of cookies, done up the work, got the breakfast. Done up all the housework, washed floors and took a bath and went over to Carlton’s with Es, Cliff and Fern. Had a lunch and visited. Came home got supper. It was nice visiting with the boys. Dorothea and Dave up to their home on the Ridge.
