The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 25 - 28, 1979

Tuesday, September 25, 1979 bedrooms, hall and bath

 

A very nice day. Hazy at times. I did a very big ironing. Betty came up, we cleaned the 2 bedrooms, bathroom and Hall. I did a dite more washing. Also ironed some more things after supper. Billie hauled wood all day. Bill piled it up.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 26, 1979 cleaned living room

 

A most beautiful day, sunny, mild, very nice. I did up regular work. Betty came up, we did the living room. It looks very nice. Done some in the kitchen. Billie hauled rest of wood. Bill piled it up.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 27, 1979 Nice Day

 

Another beautiful day. I done up my work. Betty came, we finished the kitchen. I done breezeway in PM. Bill and Billie hauled Joy’s hen dressing and spread it for her. In PM Billie hauled the wood up from the woods.

 

 

 

Friday, September 28, 1979

 

Partly cloudy today. I done up my regular work. My house looks nice all cleaned. I got ready, went to town with Betty and Delores. Bill worked on David’s pump all day. Billie got the fence down and he and Carmen rolled it up after she got home from school.
