The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 21 - 24, 1979

 

Tuesday, August 21, 1979

 

Well it has been cloudy and showery day. I done some washing, made some donuts. Went to Norway with Betty, Carmen and Zak. Fern went too. Kim home, not feeling very good. Dorothea and David did not come up to their place today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 22, 1979 A BEAUTIFUL DAY, PA CAME HOME, KIM SICK

 

This has been the first real nice day this month, it seems so good. Well, I cooked 2 fowl today, one of Betty’s and one of mine. Had a very good supper. Dorothea and David came down. Betty, Bill and I were up to Dave and Dorothea’s today. Got the house all cleaned out and ready for the repair work. I watched TV soap operas in PM. Down to Fern’s in evening. Alice Boynton called and Dorothea and Dave on their way home. Tonight Pa came home. Kim is sick, has been for a few days.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 23, 1979

 

I done my work and went to town. Betty took us today. I came home, did a wash. Betty up to Dorothea’s and helped them. I didn’t go up today. Bill went up and called. They did lot more cleaning out and the man came to see about jacking etc.

 

 

 

Friday, August 24, 1979

 

A quite nice day. I done up my work. Bill and I called at Dave’s. The Tarr Electric was there. It looks very nice up there. Betty and Zak were there. Dave worked in the cellar.
