The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, August 28, 1979

 

A beautiful day. It has been a most beautiful day, wind was right from the west this morning. I defrosted the refrigerator. I did a very big wash. Clothes dried good. Kimmy relaxed today and rested. She helped to do the housework. Kim and I took a walk up to the shelter today. Carmen didn’t work today, Betty worked for her. Jeff, Paula and a friend called and Dorothea. They went to see the new house. Jeff liked it. Laurie’s friend Richard came today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 29, 1979

 

I did a big ironing today. A quite nice day, some cloudy and mostly sunshine. Zak came up to stay all night but had to go home for the night.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 30, 1979

 

A quite nice day. I went to town. Susan and I to do shopping. Betty took the Barnaby’s to the airport to go to Arizona for the winter. Zak went with them. They gave him a dollar for helping them. They paid Betty for taking them down. Zak stayed up here all PM and stayed all night. I called on Minnie in a.m., she don’t look too good.

 

 

 

Friday, August 31, 1979 CHECKS CAME, $226.70 $117.20

 

A very nice day. It was kind of windy. Zak played inside all day. Bill all around all day. Betty went to Conway shopping. In PM Bill and I with Esther went down town to cash checks etc. I did some shopping at F.N. Zak went with us. Zak up here again tonight. Billie out to supper tonight, got home about midnight.
