The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 2 - 5, 1979

Monday, July 2, 1979

Well it hasn’t been a too good of day. Rain, cloudy and a dite of sun off and on. I been doing some odds and end jobs. Esther going home tonight from Joy’s. Joy is supposed to come tomorrow. Billie and Tom went to the auction today. It want a day they could do anything.

Tuesday, July 3, 1979 $266.70 Bill’s, mine $117.20

Joy didn’t come today as expected, so Dorothea is going to come up and stay with Joy’s family. I did a big wash, it finally cleared off, it is on the windy side. Clothes dried good. Today in our Social Security checks we had the increase which is a big help. Bill took me to town in PM. Kim went too. I cashed the checks, got some groceries.

Wednesday, July 4, 1979 Independence Day

This is been a nice day for the 4th. On the cool, sunny and cloudy side. I done up my regular work. I got ready, went to the parade with Dorothea, Cindy and Fern. It was a good parade. Came home, had supper. Went to the fireworks with Dorothea and Cindy too. We sat with Susan. Also the band concert, that too was good. Had a nice day all in all. David came up for the day. We had a cookout at Betty’s for our supper. Dorothea, David and the Wolff girls, Bill, Billie and I.

Thursday, July 5, 1979 sunny and windy

It was on the quite windy side today. I got ready and went to town. Susan drove us. Delores, Es and me. Monica went to. She is a very nice little girl. I came home. Did a wash and other odds and end jobs. Dorothea went home today until first of the week if Joy don’t get home.
