The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 25 - 27, 1979

Saturday, August 25, 1979

Well it has been a quite nice day after it cleared off in a.m. I made rolls for the supper, made a cake and made biscuits for supper. Dorothea and Dave were here. Bill, Walt and Betty and Zak went to Auburn to look at stoves. They were gone until 2 PM. Billie was in and out. He called up to Dorothea and Dave’s. They got all done now until the workman come to do what they got to do. They won’t come up for a week.

A very nice day, on the hot side. A real late summer day. I got up about 7, got breakfast. Before I got all done Carmen, Laurie and Maureen came, they had breakfast. Carmen got it for them. I done up my regular work. Bill fixed the pump. Billie done odds and end jobs like mowing and trimming the old tall hay. Mowed Walt’s field. Betty, Walt, Laurie, Carmen and Maureen all went down to Sebago. Kim and Zak stayed at home. Kim don’t feel very good. Zak has been sick too. I went down and called on them. I read 2 of the soap opera magazines. Then Carmen, Betty and Freya and Tara came. They had been down to Saliba’s. I walked down with them again. Also Heidi. We saw the little pond they made. Also it was a very pretty walk. Carmen and Laurie rode horseback after supper.
