The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, July 31, 1979 VET CAME, Norma back, Last mess of peas

A hot, humid and hazy day. I done my regular work, did my ironing before breakfast. I washed my hair and put a rinse on it. I did a dite of wash. Betty, Carmen and Zak to the bus station to meet Norma and children. Billie had the vet, he checked Heidi. She has hot spots, her hip problem is the same as most German shepherds have. The cows problem is her lung which developed from pneumonia when she was a small calf. He clamped the little bull and Carmen’s bull. Joy over and picked string beans at Betty’s. I walked down through the field and Heidi too where they were picking the beans.

Another hot humid hazy day. I done my regular work. Went over to Denmark with Betty and Norma. Then we looked at some houses up on the Ridge. Came home, picked string beans, watched the TV shows. Betty, Norma, Joy, Carmen and Laurie all rigged up and went down to Dorothea’s for the night. Got home early this morning. Billie bought a new gate yesterday. Got some medicine for Heidi.
