The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 21 - 24, 1979 Bridal Shower for Debbie

Friday, September 21, 1979 a slight frost, 2nd

 

A quite nice day. I been busy all day. Went to town. Bill worked part of the day. I canned my tomatoes. Betty’s house all cleaned. She went with Walt today.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 22, 1979

 

Cloudy in a.m. It cleared in PM. I done my regular work, baked beans. Carmen up, we canned her tomatoes and made her ripe cuke pickles. I made a couple pies and biscuits. Bill worked at camp. Billie busy all day etc.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 23, 1979

 

A very beautiful day. I done up regular work, did a dite of washing. Got ready and went down to Betty’s for Debbie’s kitchen shower. Dorothea came down and went. Quite a few were there, they had a nice lot of kitchen gifts. Betty’s house looks so nice. Bill was up to David’s. Billie done jobs around here. It has been a beautiful day.






 

 

 

 

Monday, September 24, 1979 heavy Frost this morning, 3rd one, ZAK UP FOR BIRTHDAY DINNER

 

I done up my work, got regular wash done, did bedspreads and curtains. Getting ready to clean. Zak was up for his birthday supper. We had steak. Bill up to David’s trying to get the pump going. Billie hauled wood in. Bill and Billie piled it up.
