The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 17 - 20, 1979

Monday, September 17, 1979 Cow and steer went

 

It was a very nice day. I did a wash and regular work. Went down to Betty’s. We cleaned her upstairs. Bill home all day. Bill worked at camp.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 18, 1979 steer weighed 627 cow weighed 435

 

A perfect day. Sunny and very mild. I done up my regular work, down to Betty’s. We did her bedroom and den. Came home about 2 PM. I cooked steak for supper outside. I did a dite of washing this morning. Bill worked at Barnaby’s. Billie been very busy all day.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 19, 1979 paid taxes, windy

 

A beautiful day but on the cool side. I was at Betty’s all day. Got her living room and dining room all done. Betty had lunch with Walt over on the job. Bill worked in the forenoon at the camp. Billie cleaned up the garden etc. Cold at night, a frost expected.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 20, 1979 first frost (mild one)

 

Well we had a dite of frost, not too bad. Bill worked at camp all day. I worked at Betty’s, done kitchen, porch and utility room. That house looks very nice tonight, cleaned and the most pleasant house in town. I love it. Billie cleaned up rest of the garden, raspberries all done and dressing on them.
