The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 13 -16, 1979 Zak's 10th Birthday

Thursday, September 13, 1979

It was a nice sunny day, on the warm side. I did a small wash. Got ready, went to Portland with Betty. Took Kim and Zak to the dentist to have their teeth checked etc. Fern went too. It was a long day.

Friday, September 14, 1979 Billie all done work

A quite nice mild day but heavy rain and some wind from the hurricane Frederick. I done a few odds and end jobs. I watched TV in PM. Billie all done work tonight. He gets so nervous and upset working there. I hope he never has to go back. Not a very good place to work.

A beautiful day. I done up my work, made bread and a cake. Dorothea and Dave up to the farm. Then Dorothea came back and she and I went over to Bill Walker’s and got the Allen reunion pictures. After supper we went down to Betty’s for Zak’s 10th birthday. He got many nice gifts. Carlton and Phyllis were there. That was nice for them to be at one of the family gatherings.

Zak and Monica! hahaha

Love this of Billie

A very nice September day. Not too warm or too cold. I didn’t get up until 7:45. Bill had gone to work at the camp. I got our breakfast. Dorothea and Dave came about 12 AM. I done up regular work. Billie went with Butch down country for a load of bulls. Betty came, she and I went up to Dorothea and Dave’s. Betty and Carmen went over to Joy’s and got the horses and brought them over for a while to help eat up the good feed in the pastures.
