The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 18 - 20, 1979

Saturday, August 18, 1979 DAVID AND DOROTHEA MADE A DOWN PAYMENT ON THE CHESLEY EDSON FARM TODAY. IT IS OWNED BY DOMINIC CARDOSI

Well it was nice and clear in the a.m. but it got cloudy in PM and late showers. Well today Dorothea and David made a payment on the Chet Edson Farm. They bought it off Dominic Cardosi. They worked all day and till after dark. David cut and trimmed trees, bushes, tall grass all around the barn. Dorothea with a lot of help cleaned upstairs, hauled a lot to the dump. I made rolls, pie, cake, done up my work. Changed the beds, washed floors, went to Dorothea and David’s in a.m. Then Bill and I went up later after supper. Callers at Dorothea’s today was Betty, Sandra, Linda, Jay, Kathy, Debbie, Cindy, Carmen, Kim, Zak, Buddy, Joy, Dominic, Billie, Bill and I. Esther and Susan called also.

Sunday, August 19, 1979

Well this has been a mean day weatherwise. Cloudy, rainy and not too warm. I didn’t get up till late, 9 AM. Dorothea and David came before I got up. Well, I got right up and got dressed. They stayed a little while then left and went up to their new home. Later on in the PM Bill and I went up. Linda, Susan and their husbands called. Betty, Walt, Kim and Billie called.

Monday, August 20, 1979 Kimmy got haircut

Well it has been a partly cloudy day, some sun. Clothes dried quite well. I did a big wash. I cooked a pot roast for supper. Kimmy got her hair cut today, she looks more like a young girl. Very nice and I like it very much. I hope I see Zak’s cut and neat looking too. Dorothea and David didn’t come up today. Pa is about the same. Billie don’t feel very good, he is having health problems. Dawn up in evening and got corn.
