The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 16, 1979 Norma and Family Arrive

Friday, July 13, 1979

A very hot day. I done up my work early. Got ready and went with Betty to take Zak down for his last day of school for the basketball clinic. He has had a nice week and enjoyed it very much. I hope he gets a lot out of it. I went down with them every morning he went. After we left him we went to Portland. Betty did Walt’s birthday shopping. Dorothea went too. Joy is not hearing very good reports from Buddy.

Saturday, July 14, 1979 Hot Hot

It was kind of hazy but very hot. I done up regular work, dusted, washed floors, changed beds, windows. In early PM Es and Fern called. They spent the afternoon and for supper. Billie went, got some cold cut meat. We, Es and I, made sandwiches, we ate out on back porch. Sandwiches, chips, fruit and cold drinks. It was nice and we all enjoyed it. Bill, Cliff and Fern watched the ballgame. Cliff was in the parade in Harrison. It was very hot. He made up but I say it is too much for him in his condition.

Sunday, July 15, 1979 Mama’s 99, CLOUDY ALL DAY

Well it has been cloudy all day and about dark it began to drizzle which it did all night. We need rain for the garden. I didn’t do anything today, I got my magazines all read and papers. Billie in and out. Bill cultivated Walt and our gardens. Billie helped Walt get the manure out. Mama’s 99th birthday. Also the Levine’s, Donald and David, 17th birthday.

Monday, July 16, 1979 Milan, Norma, Jim and the children Regine and Jason came late in PM

Well it has rained most all day, it cleared off some in PM. I cooked fried chicken for supper. Milan was here. They will stay a couple of days and go home. Jim leaves Friday for home. Norma, Regina and Jason a going to stay a while longer. I did a big ironing. They did some shopping in town.
