The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 28 - July 1, 1979

Thursday, June 28, 1979 Hot and muggy

 

Well today we got a thundershowers and rain. We needed it so much. I done up my work. We, Bill and I, picked 13 quarts of strawberries. I went to town. Betty took Delores and I. Kimmy up here in PM. Billie had to work very late tonight, has got to rest of the week. Town garage or the old Ripley and Fletcher ford garage all gone.

 

 

 

Friday, June 29, 1979

 

A nice sunny day. I done my refrigerator on the porch and the wash. Then got ready and Bill, Kimmy and I went down to Dorothea and David’s. Had a very nice visit and I came home. Got supper to going. Kim and I watched the soaps, they were so good.

 

 

 

Saturday, June 30, 1979

 

Well this morning it was foggy and cloudy, a dite of sun. I done up my regular work then I picked strawberries. Bill cultivated here and down to Betty’s. Billie had to work this forenoon. Kids called off and on. Betty called in evening. Betty and Carmen and Kim up to the shelter today. They placed cats, dogs and puppies. Billie and I called at Dawn’s this evening. Susan and kids called a little while. Zak had a high fever and sick a bed all day.

Sunday, July 1, 1979

 

At last it is raining which we need very bad. It has been quite cloudy and showery for a day now, today it is raining hard. Billie went around seeing different ones. Bill and I went to a couple garage sales. Susan, Kim and Zak also. Billie starts a weeks vacation today. Poor hay weather so far.
