The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3 - 6, 1971 Zak Got Hand Hurt


Thursday, June 3, 1971

I washed some clothes etc. shirts for Billie. I cleaned some more house closets etc. Kim and Zak up for a little while. Kim stayed all night. She enjoyed it so much.



Friday, June 4, 1971

A nice clear day. Up early, got work all done and Betty, kids and I to Portland. Called at Dorothea’s. She went shopping with us. Betty tried to get tiles for floor. Zak got his hand hurt in car door. Took him to MM Center for x-ray, all right. Came home, got supper. Es over for evening. Bill, Es and I to town.



Saturday, June 5, 1971

Clear but cold and windy. We cleaned the living room rug. Bill did it and Ferns too. Bill and Billie mowed lawns, cleaned up all outside etc. Betty mowed her lawns too. Es called. It has been a cold windy day but good for drying rugs. It looks very good.



Sunday, June 6, 1971

A nice sunny day. Warmer. I got up early, got floor slept, washed and waxed. Made a cake, done up regular work. Billie and Lawrence trading bulls today. Carl and Dorothy McCaman came. Down to Betty’s for a cookout, first one of season. Billie Deming over tonight to stay while McCaman’s are here.
