The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 26, 1971


Wednesday, June 23, 1971

It was foggy in a.m., cleared early p.m. Carmen here this morning after staying last night. I done regular work, and made a pumpkin pie. Down to Betty’s to tend Zak while she cleaned Pa’s apartment. She cleaned up the barn some. Bill down to Gordon’s in p.m. Deming’s all went up to Telstar.



Thursday, June 24, 1971

Cloudy and foggy again this morning. It cleared. I helped Betty, she mowed lawns. She registered kids for swimming lessons. We had a heavy rain shower, some lightning.



Friday, June 25, 1971 dog died (Susan’s)

A little cloudy in a.m. I done a lot today. I want at Betty’s. I cleaned up the whole house good. Washed and waxed floors. Zak here in a.m. I went down to Betty’s in p.m. a little while. She is already for her company. Bill made back doorsteps today for Betty. About 4:30 the company came. We had awful heavy rain showers tonight. Susan is dog got run over. They took him to vets and he was put to sleep. Es over here tonight.



Saturday, June 26, 1971

A nice clear cold day. Bill pulled weeds. Billie trimmed lawns. I did regular work and mended. Chris here, I took care of him while Es and Susan to Tom back to Portland to return home. Es over again tonight for supper. Had strawberries and cream.
