The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 1 - 4, 1971


Thursday, July 1, 1971 HOT

Another hot and humid day. Had showers in late p.m. And it made it a little cooler. Betty, kids and I went to Norway. She got her curtains and shades for the new room. Gordon came up and they put the new door on. Es over tonight, she, Bill and I took a ride over the new paved Main Street. Billie got a brand-new Honda. Honey Hatch died.



Friday, July 2, 1971

Bill worked at Betty’s, he finished up down there. Betty took Zak to Portland for asthma checkup etc. I stayed at Dorothea’s. Had a nice visit with her. Carmen and Kim stayed there also. Came home, went to town shopping after supper.



Saturday, July 3, 1971 $134.50 SS second one, HOT

Billie worked for Lawrence mowing hay at Ada Merrill’s of the Limington district. I went for a short ride with Es and Susan today. Milan came this morning. He was here for supper. We went to see the fireworks and to the band concert. Cliff plays in the Bridgton Band now.

Another hot day. I done up my work. Washed sheets, pillow cases.
