The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 16, 1971


Tuesday, July 13, 1971 Peas

A nice day, not too hot. I didn’t do too much today. Regular work. I cooked a chicken for supper, also had first mess of peas. Dorothea and Jeff up today. Walt home and worked on the play house. Cliff and Billie over in evening to watch ballgame. Es came in visit. Jeff Smith here with them. Billie tried out a car tonight.



Wednesday, July 14, 1971

Had showers today. Quite a shower. Went to Norway and Stoneham with Betty and kids. Fern went too. Betty ordered her hens for the fall. Had bad wind storm with the shower. Fern, Lloyd came up in evening. Not too hot. Kind of cloudy in a.m. after a much-needed rain of last night. Esther’s folks looking for a new car at Norway.



Thursday, July 15, 1971

A very comfortable day. I went down to Betty’s. We did her flower garden, picked peas and greens. Took kids down swimming.



Friday, July 16, 1971 Billie starts two weeks vacation

A nice hot day. I done regular work. Washed some. I went down to Betty’s a while. I went to town before supper. Deming’s over in evening. Billie started his vacation tonight. Bill got paid $100 tonight.
