The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, August 27, 1971 BILLIE ALL DONE WORK AT DIELECTIC

Kind of on the cloudy side. Billie all through work at Dielectic. Goes to work at Saunders Dowell Mill Monday. We picked beans. Carmen here and Kim came up. We went shopping. Esther and Cliff here in evening.


Saturday, August 28, 1971 Rain

It rained quite heavy, winds during day. Dorothea and David came up. David to garage to get car fixed. They were here till after supper. Had a good visit. Betty and Walt had Walt’s sister and family for the weekend. A bad storm, Hurricane Doria.



Sunday, August 29, 1971

A beautiful day, on the hot, hazy and humid side. Got up, had breakfast, done up the work. Went down to Cornish with Billie to get butter. No one at home. Fern, Lloyd went too. Came home, went to the hospital to see Lila. She is better. Came home, Bill and I took a ride over to Fryeburg. Had supper then rode around on strange roads. Dobbins called to talk with Bill.



Monday, August 30, 1971 BILLIE ON A NEW JOB, SAUNDERS DOWELL MILL

Hazy and fog in morning. I washed. Billie began working at Dowell Mill today. But got through tonight. Not able to do the work.
