The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 7 - 10, 1971 Nanny's Birthday

Saturday, August 7, 1971 Hot, not too bad

Billie worked at Raymond today. I done regular work, made rolls. Picked some beans and peas. Bill painted the new porch floor, it looks very good.

Sunday, August 8, 1971 61

Nice day, not too hot. A very nice day. Got my regular work done, made a potato salad. Went down to Ferns to help her get ready for a big cookout. Esther down there too and helped. She and Fern got almost done before I went down. Fern had all the family. Demings, Ragers, K Smith, R Smith, D Smith, Crooks, Hortons, Thomases and W Horton. It was very nice, all had a good time. Afterwards all came to Betty’s and they had cake, ice cream and gifts for Mother Crook’s 61st birthday. Very nice. Bill painted on the new porch two coats. It looks very good.

Monday, August 9, 1961

A hot day. Bill and I went down to South Windham to LC Andrews looking for porch covering for the new back porch. Also called at the two trailer parks in Oxford. I went down to Betty’s when I got home. I did my washing today. Bill didn’t work today.

Tuesday, August 10, 1971 Hot Hot

A very nice day, on the hot side. I done regular work. Then I worked at Betty’s. Bill didn’t work today.
