The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 30 - August 2, 1971

Friday, July 30, 1971 Billie got new Valliant Plymouth car brand-new 1971

Hot. I mean miserable day. Some sun but so hot and humid. I got up early, went down to Betty’s. She went with Walt. She visited with Dorothea and Rowena while she waited for Walt. In p.m. they went shopping. Then to dinner and show. I was down to Betty’s till 10 PM. Bill and Billie down there for supper. This p.m. Billie got a brand-new 1971 Plymouth car, Valliant. A deep tan. Very pretty, bought it of McDonald’s.

Saturday, July 31, 1971 Jeff left for Michigan

Up early, got my beans in to bake. Done up regular work. Got ready and went to the Yellow Bird Jet Port. Jeff left at 12:40 for Michigan to visit with his father for a month. Tonight Billie and I, and we asked Ken and Delores, went down to Ushion Hill’s and got butter. Went in Billie’s brand-new car.

Sunday, August 1, 1971

Well, it was partly fair today. I washed, clothes dried. Bill worked on the porch. Keith called. We picked peas and beans. Hortons and Yates went on a picnic. They called here in evening.

Monday, August 2, 1971 Billie back to work

Cloudy, showery, foggy and a plain miserable day. Bill went down to Jean’s but didn’t work because of the weather. He came home and did a dite more on the porch. Tom Rager came this afternoon. He is going to make another try at living with Susan and their children. Today Billie back to work after two weeks vacation. Carmen up for supper. Zak and Betty up in eve.
