The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 11 - 14, 1971

Friday, June 11, 1971 Last day of school

A nice sunny day. McCaman’s went home today. I went down to Betty’s. Bill working down there. Billie home tonight for a weeks vacation. Es, Cliff, Fern, Lloyd called after supper, also Betty and kids. I went down town with Betty today. Ken and Dolores up to Brud’s today to go to Nola’s graduation Sunday. Last day of school. Carmen goes to third grade.

Saturday, June 12, 1971 Zak very sick

A nice sunny day. It was hot. They mowed lawns. I made two pies and bread and rolls. Down to babysit with the Horton kids. Zak had a fever and had a bad convulsion. It was awful. I was alone with Carmen, Kim and him. He came out of it. He is cutting teeth. It shook us all up.

Sunday, June 13, 1971

A fair day. Some sun and partly cloudy. I done up regular work. Hot in a.m. In p.m. over to Deming’s for their first cookout. Had a good time. The Crooks, Hortons, Ragers and the Yates. Bill got sick and came home. Nola graduated.

Monday, June 14, 1971 Kennard and Ken’s birthday

Partly cloudy. Some sun. I went down to Betty’s to babysit while she mowed lawns and painted her porch furniture. I came home, made preparations to go for a ride tomorrow. Cold tonight. Billie and Walt put some wood shavings around red leaf maple. Billie has a week of vacation. Brud came and brought Ken and Delores home. Nola came too.
