The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 19 - 22, 1971


Saturday, June 19, 1971 Vince home, Hot Hot Hot

A very hot day. I done regular work. Washed a few things. Today Vince came home from the hospital, not at all good. Bill and Billie didn’t mowed lawns this week, too hot and dry. Bill and I called at Jean and Stan’s. Tom still here.



Sunday, June 20, 1971 Hot

Another hot day. I dite of breeze. Bill got for Father’s Day a nice cookout grill, all the extras. A side tray for it. A nice dinner of lobsters, cards and a picture. Hortons up here for a lobster feed Walt bought. Over to North Bridgton for a swim with Hortons, Ragers and Deming’s. Yates and Deming’s called in eve.

Monday, June 21, 1971 RAIN

A nice sunny hot day. I did a dite of washing. Went down to Dorothea’s, drove out, got some donuts, bread etc. Came home, got my clothes in. Es over while Cliff and Bill went bowling. Vince still not very good. Rager family up to Betty’s for supper. Had a shower and a nice lot of rain fell.



Tuesday, June 22, 1971 Hair Set

Another nice hot day, not too bad. Done up regular work. Got ready, went down to Betty’s, she took kids and me over to June’s. They got their hair cut. I had mine set. Fern was there. She had a permanent. Came home, I was alone all p.m. Betty took kids to the doctors for shots etc. It was a cooler day after the shower of last night. Fern, Lloyd called in evening. Carmen came up tonight to stay all night, she was so pleased.
