The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 5 - 9, 1960



Saturday, March 5, 1960

A nice day. Blanche and I over to Norway. She got some Easter clothes for Debbie. I cleaned up the house in p.m. Mama up all afternoon. Betty worked in her room all forenoon.

Sunday, March 6, 1960

Kind of cold and windy today. Didn’t do much. Mama got up this forenoon, up most all the day. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Dawn and Irene called. I wrote my letters. Betty finished her room. She likes it very much.





Monday, March 7, 1960

Partly cloudy. Town meeting. Billie sold Calico to Lawrence Boynton today. I went down and voted with Fern and Lloyd. Billie and I to town to send a car payment for Billie. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd and uncle Os here in p.m. Mama much better. Betty home very late.



Tuesday, March 8, 1960

Cloudy in a.m. I churned, cooked. Sally and Jean here in p.m. Kennie and Dot in a.m. Billie got his income tax check $28. Betty up to Dawn’s in evening. Billie went away in p.m., didn’t get home very early.



Wednesday, March 9, 1960

A cold windy day. I did a big ironing. Kennie, Dot, Kennard and Raymond called. Bill still kind of lame.
