The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, January 24, 1960

A very nice day. Bob and Blanche here in p.m. They and Dorothea took pictures of Jeff outside. Bob and his new movie camera. Dorothea and Jeff down to Howard’s for dinner. Kennie, Dot called also Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Gordon and family called also.

Monday, January 25, 1960

Cold day. We washed. I cooked and churned. Betty up to Dawn’s in evening. Dorothea over to Barbs.



Tuesday, January 26, 1960 Billie Deming’s birthday three years old

A very nice clear day. I cooked, got the clothes in. Barb and Wesley here for the forenoon and for lunch. Wesley stayed for PM and supper. Dorothea took him home. Bill up to Ilan’s in evening. Billie and Bobby had to stop in the woods because the saw broke. Jean left for home today from her mother’s at Scotland.







Wednesday, January 27, 1960

A nice day, cloudy in p.m. Jeff and I down to Ferns for the day. Had a good dinner. Jeff was very good, they enjoyed him very much. In afternoon Dorothea over to June Stackhouse’s to get her hair colored. Over to Barbs. She brought her home. In evening she and Betty up to Dawn’s and skating, had a good time. Betty got upset and good. I ironed tonight. Raymond here for supper tonight.
