The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 29 - May 4, 1960



Friday, April 29, 1960

Another nice day, not quite so warm. I wrote to George Crook. Billie smelting again tonight. Bill and I to town after supper. Betty to the movies.



Saturday, April 30, 1960

A very nice day. I cooked. Betty gone all day as usual. Bill took off the storm windows this p.m. Billie to Naples for a physical examination. Bill and I up to Bills and Evelyn’s after supper. Trouble up to Ilan’s tonight because of Holly’s boyfriend.



Sunday, May 1, 1960

Rain again today. Done up the work. Betty gone all day. Nancy Smart Dyer and baby called. Lloyd, Kennard, Aunt Ava, Kennie, Dot, Bob and Blanche. I wrote my letters. Raymond over for supper.

I washed. Getting ready to clean house.



Tuesday, May 3, 1960

A very nice day. I got paid today $33. Went to town and got curtains and two new bedspreads. Also my cleaning utensils. Lloyd took me down. Betty came home all lamed up tonight.




Wednesday, May 4, 1960

A very hot day. I began my cleaning upstairs. Betty lame again. Bill and Billie began on the hen house tonight. Bob and Blanche called. Art Ward and family up tonight to see the lambs.
