The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 11 - 15, 1960





Thursday, February 11, 1960

Rain Rain Rained HARD. Billie sick all night. Today Mama gone to bed sick. I washed, got it done early. Just didn’t do much around here today. Read papers etc. DOROTHEA and JEFF been gone one week from this country. Miss them very much.



Friday, February 12, 1960

Another cloudy dismal day. Mama very sick and Billie sick. Bill came home from work about 12:30 sick. Dr. (?) Bishpheberger came today. Kennard called. I didn’t do much.



Saturday, February 13, 1960 Letter from Dorothea

A letter today from Dorothea. They are so happy to be together again. Mama very sick today. Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava and Blanche also here today. Billie better today. Betty gone most all the day again. A beautiful day. Dr. came again.



Sunday, February 14, 1960 Linda Diane 3 today

Another one of those awful bleak sleety days. Lloyd and Kennard here in a.m. Mama a wee bit better. I wrote to D and D and Es.



Monday, February 15, 1960

I didn’t wash. Very cold. I didn’t feel too hot. Fern done my washing. Mama very sick. Dr. didn’t have much hope of her today, says she should be better by tomorrow. Doctor  here.
