The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 11 - 14, 1960



Monday, January 11, 1960

Another awful cold day. Dorothea washed, I hung out. Billie and Bobby began to cut some timber down back here. Kennie and Dot called. Also Kennard and Raymond. Esther operated on today at Barberton Citizens Hospital



Tuesday, January 12, 1960

Another nice day, not so cold. Didn’t get much done today. In a.m. Lorraine and Wanda Jean called. In p.m. Dorothea and I went to town. Barb and Wesley called. Barb left Wesley while she got her hair done. Fern and Lloyd called in p.m. Also Martikainen went down in the woods. Betty up to Dawn’s in evening. Dorothea over to Barbs. I churned, made cake and pie, got the clothes in this p.m. Jeff a little upset today, teeth we think.



Wednesday, January 13, 1960

A nice day. Blanche came over in a.m. And p.m. Sally called, was here all afternoon. In evening Betty gone down to the town skating etc. Dorothea and I down to see Mrs. Kilborn. Said Betty doing fine now. We got Betty’s things she had a Dolly’s. Also called to see Ruby Hill and her family. Esther called us tonight from hospital. She had a awful headache from the spinal. She is better now though.



Thursday, January 14, 1960

A very nice day. Warm and sunny. Mrs. Oberg, Linda Berry came up with Betty and got her turtles to give to someone at school. Evelyn Ridlon called and was here for lunch. In p.m. I cooked, washed windows etc. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called for a little while. Betty didn’t go off tonight. She was late getting home from school.
