The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 1 - 5, 1960

Monday, February 1, 1960

Miss Dorothea and Jeffrey very much. It’s hard to see them go away to be gone so long. I washed today. Her check came. I took it down and got it off to them. Kennard called in p.m. Bill and I called at Sally and Gordon’s tonight.

Aunt Betty and Uncle Milan in CT with Jeff

Tuesday, February 2, 1960

Partly cloudy. Some lite snow flurries. Still miss Dorothea and Jeff. I cleaned up upstairs today. Billie and Bobby still working down in the woods. Kennie, Dot and Wanda Jean called this morning. Billie and I over to Aunt Ava’s tonight. Their hens went today.

Wednesday, February 3, 1960

Cloudy this a.m., cleared off in p.m. They began to haul the logs from the woods today. Billie and Bobby finished cutting today. I cleaned bathroom, Mama’s bedroom, ironed and cooked. Betty home tonight. Miss Dorothea and Jeff.

Thursday, February 4, 1960 Dorothea and Jeff flyaway to Dennis

Card from Dorothea and Jeff. They left today at 3 o’clock for England. They stayed with Carlton and Phyllis’s folks last night. Phyllis called me and Carlton tonight. They all had a good time together. Phyl and the girls left Carlton’s about 10 AM, went to Maguire Air Force Base, met Ronald and his wife. Also a friend of D and D and they all see them off for England to be gone two years and nine months. Dennis will be there three full years. It makes it so hard to have been gone so long. Been thinking of them all day.

Friday, February 5, 1960 Telegram from D, D and J, they got to England today

We got a word today from Dennis. Dorothea and Jeffie arrived in England all safe and sound. Kennie, Dot, Kennard, Aunt Ava called today. I washed and in p.m. I went to town with Billie, done the grocery shopping. Betty to town and elsewhere with Roger Staley, Holly and Steve tonight. Billie and I to Uncle Os. He is sick and didn’t look good. Flu. Thought of Dorothea and Jeff last night flying to England.
