The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 6 - 10, 1960



Wednesday, January 6, 1960

A very nice day. Dorothea, Barbara, Jeff, Fern and I went to Pease Air Force Base at Portsmouth NH. Dorothea had to do some business there. Jeff 18 months today.



Thursday, January 7, 1960

Nice day. Blanche here today. She cut Mama’s hair and Dr. Nash. In p.m. Dorothea, Blanche, Jeff and I went down and called at Lorraine’s. I cooked in a.m. Dolly here for supper and till late in evening. Oil came today.

Friday, January 8, 1960

Fair. Dorothea over to Aunt Ava’s for the day. I washed a window or two, took care of Jeff, done regular work. Billie took Jeff down to Ferns in p.m. Betty came home late from school. She walked.



Saturday, January 9, 1960

A very cold windy day. I cooked. Billie and I to town in early p.m. Betty walked to town in the extreme cold. I asked her not to go. Blanche here in p.m. She, Dorothea and I made homemade ice cream. Bob and Blanche here for supper. George and Dawn called for a little while. Billie out all p.m. Bill out for p.m. Betty to movies in eve. Dorothea down to Sally’s for a party for Danny Porter.






Sunday, January 10, 1960

Very cold this morning. Bill nor Billie’s car wouldn’t start. Stan Whitney and Robert came. Roberts car was here. They worked on them but couldn’t get them started. Finally Ilan and Bobby got Ilan’s started with Bobby’s tractor and Ilan pushed Bill’s and got his started. All the rest was pushed and started. Bill, Bob, Bobby went up and started George and Vics. Dolores called. Not much done around here today. Clouded up in p.m. Betty up in her room resting all day. Esther entered the Barberton Citizens hospital today for surgery on the veins in her legs.
