The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, April 21, 1960 Billie got a job

Billie hired out today at the Dielectric plant. He worked at Chet’s today. Mama not very good. Betty to town with her shorts on.



Friday, April 22, 1960

I ironed, cleaned up the house. Aunt Ava called. Mama a little better. Bill and I to town in evening. Betty also. She got her new shoes tonight and socks.



Saturday, April 23, 1960

A cloudy dismal day. Betty home all day. She cooked and helped to do the housework. Mama better in p.m. Billie smelting tonight. Blanche and Bob called. Billie and I to town in a.m. Jean 60 today. In evening Betty to town. I finished my recipes writing them off and putting into a filing box.



Sunday, April 24, 1960

A cloudy wet miserable day. Billie and Bill worked out in the yard cleaning up. Betty and Billie cleaned up the cars. I cleaned a few smelts, cooked a pie and some donuts. Mama much better. Billie and I over to Raymonds and called a little while. Raymond called over here. Also Aunt Ava, Fern and Lloyd, Kennie and Dot. Hayd and Steve. I wrote my letters.
