The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 16 - 20, 1960



Tuesday, February 16, 1960

It was a nice day today. Mama was better today. Blanche here this p.m. She helped to care for Mama. Aunt Ava here also Fern, Lloyd and Kennard. Dr. here again today. Raymond here also today.



Wednesday, February 17, 1960 Betty Louise Crook 17 today

A very nice day. Warm and sunny. I churned. Took care of Mama. Aunt Ava called, Blanche, Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os. Mama had a mean day. Had a birthday cake made by Fern and ice cream for supper. In evening she went up to Dawn’s for a party. Bill up to Hayd’s in evening. Raymond here today. Dr. came today for the last time.



Thursday, February 18, 1960

Another nice day. Fern and Lloyd here today. Fern and L. helped with my washing. Kennie, Dot, Lorraine, Wanda Jean up here in Lorraine’s new car. Aunt Ava called, Kennard, Blanche and Sally. I went to town in p.m. Dr. Nash not very good today.






Friday, February 19, 1960

A bad storm this morning. No school. Bill couldn’t get to work. Betty up to Dawn’s. Billie and Raymond plowed. A miserable day. Mama not too good. Esther called tonight. I didn’t get much done today. Oh the weather is so disgusting. Vacation starts tonight.



Saturday, February 20, 1960

Mama not too good. Betty up to Dawn’s this morning. I didn’t want her to go. A dreary day all day.
