The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 5, 1960 Billie Bought a Car



Friday, April 1, 1960

Cloudy this morning. I done up the work. Mel Green called this morning with a car to show Billie. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Betty home from school. Kay Fleck came with her. Betty downtown in evening.



Saturday, April 2, 1960

A very nice day. I ironed early in a.m., I cooked, done up the housework. Billie and I downtown in a.m. Bill and I to town in p.m. Billie looked at a 1955 Plymouth at McDonald’s. Betty home all day except took a walk up to Joe Pikes to see his shop.



Sunday, April 3, 1960

Cloudy again today, on the raw side. Kennie and Dot up this morning after water. Aunt Ava called. Betty home most all day till noon, up to Irene’s after noon. Billie down to Lawrence to see about a cow. Fern, Lloyd, Blanche and Bobby here.



Monday, April 4, 1960

It was cloudy and rained in early morning. Cleared late, turned out to be a very nice day. Sunny and warm, clothes dried good. I got my cooking recipes out and began writing them for my file. Billie took me to town in a.m. I paid a BILL. I washed and got clothes in. Betty to movies with Steve and Dawn.



Tuesday, April 5, 1960 Billie got his 1955 PLYMOUTH

RAIN all day. I ironed. Blanche here at noon. Billie bought a 1955 green Plymouth of Roger McDonald’s. A very nice clean pretty car. He is much pleased with it. He, Betty and I down to Ferns. Called at Aunt Ava’s. Kennard here to see it. We all liked it. Cindy and Nona’s birthday.
