The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 29 - October 3, 1956



Saturday, September 29, 1956

A very nice day. Delores up here in a.m. with Nola Raye and Jeffrey Wyvern. I did up all the work, went to town in p.m. Bought some apples today. $11.50. Bill worked for Saliba today.



Sunday, September 30, 1956

Another nice day. Bill worked for Saliba again today. Billie hauled bedding for the tie up for winter. I cooked. Delores called, also Rayburn and Karen. Bobbie helped Billie. Linda Berry here all day.



Monday, October 1, 1956

Cloudy in a.m. Cleared in middle of forenoon. I washed. Did regular work. Card from Joy. A letter from Milan and Betty. Justin and Edith called this evening.



Tuesday, October 2, 1956

I churned and ironed. Delores up in a.m. She took Mama down to Fern’s. In evening I went down to June Stackhouse and got a permanent. Tonight Bill didn’t talk.



Wednesday, October 3, 1956

A very beautiful day all day. I was alone except for Donnie. Donnie outdoor. I cleaned up the house. First school dance tonight for the season. I wrote to Frank again tonight. Bill still mum.
