The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 19 -22, 1956 Thanksgiving



Monday, November 19, 1956

A very nice day. I washed and done a little cooking. Betty got her new overshoes today. Bill didn’t work. Got a new battery for car. Over to Aunt Linnie’s in the evening.



Tuesday, November 20, 1956

Did up the work, ironed, done some more Thanksgiving cooking. Kennie called. Kennard and Dolores called also Bob in evening and Bobby Smart. My Christmas club check came today $100. Esther 44 today.



Wednesday, November 21, 1956

Rain today. Bill and I over to Norway. I bought Donnie some new clothes, done some Thanksgiving shopping. Bill over to Wilner’s to see about a job. They asked him to come back Monday. We had a letter from Dorothea.



Thursday, November 22, 1956 Thanksgiving

A very nice day, had a good time and dinner. Bill worked down to camp with Lloyd. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os here for dinner. Ken, Dolores, Kennie and Dot, Bob and Blanche here in afternoon. Bob and Blanche had supper. Chicken, roast pork, gravies, sweet potatoes, mashed potato, squash, onions, peas, celery, pickles, cranberry sauce, salad, hot rolls, nut bread, lemon, sponge, custard, date filled pies, suet pudding, ice cream cake and whip cream cake, coffee.
