The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 14 - 17, 1956

Sunday, October 14, 1956

Another nice day. Bill helped Lloyd in a.m. Billie and Raymond hauled bedding in p.m. Betty to church. Kay came home with her. Mama watched TV services all forenoon. Donnie okay now. Fern, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis and I called on Os Abbott today, had a nice ride, also over to Norma’s. Kennard and Delores called on him too. Also they called here and Kennie and Dot.



Monday, October 15, 1956

A very nice HOT day. I washed. Lassie was away all night, we found her late in p.m. at Lloyds. Holly here for supper. Got a very pretty anniversary card from Dorothea. I churned.



Tuesday, October 16, 1956

Another awful Hot day. I ironed and cooked. Today I got my first check from Mr. Ayers, first time in two years. Seemed good to see Lassie here today after being gone for several days. Ironed on porch today.



Wednesday, October 17, 1956

Another nice warm day. Went up to Old Bills and  (?) Marmies today. Took a picnic lunch. Went up through Sweden, Lovell, West Lovell, Lovell Ctr., North Fryeburg, Chatham, New Hampshire. Had a picnic lunch. Went with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis had a nice ride and good time. Charles and Evie called here after we got home. Mama, Donnie and I went today.
